Greece: Death Toll From Migrant Shipwreck Increases To 27

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - The confirmed number of dead from last week's shipwreck of an overloaded migrant smuggling boat in the western Aegean Sea has increased to 27 after another body was found on an island just east of Athens, Greek authorities said Wednesday.

Tens of thousands of people fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East, Asia and Africa try to make their way into the European Union each year through perilous sea journeys, with most attempting to reach Greece or Italy.

LONDON, July 4 (Reuters) - The father of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday defended his decision to fly to Greece even though at that time the government advice was for UK nationals to avoid all but essential international travel.

A Union Jack flies proudly next to a framed photo of the late Queen Elizabeth II, while an iconic red telephone box is perched on the corner of the Britain Resto Lounge as cars with UK licence plates zoom past.

Speaking in his office where British and Albanian flags stand side by side, Has mayor Liman Morina told AFP that 80 per cent of his constituents 'survive thanks to the hard and honest work of their relatives in Britain'.



"I don't know what the reaction of the British public (has been), I came here to have a quiet time to organise the house," he said in comments to local reporters carried by Sky News, referring to measures to make the property COVID-19 secure for lettings.

They're worried about this sort of thing, because what you end up with if you're not careful is small business finding it difficult to get certain jobs done because people just say "I'm heading off home".



Klodian Kastrati, a sociologist who works in Has, said: 'Emigration is an epidemic that affects all young people here contaminated by the idea of leaving for Britain in the hope of creating a better future'.

The interior is decorated with Andy Warhol and Gilbert & George prints and has a 'chill room' with a cinema screen. There's no pool, but a beach is a short drive away. The five bedrooms are super-comfortable.

The villa's interior is simple and homely in style. It has a kitchen with a large dining table, two bedrooms and a sofa-bed. The village of Bassacutena, two miles away, has a little café, bar and shops.

But the town of Has in Albania's northeast, dubbed 'Little London', now serves as a homage to the country that has taken in so many of its citizens, despite plans in Westminster to crack down on the influx of more than 12,000 migrants this year.

The interior has a minimalist style with oak wood floors and large windows to make the most of the scenery. This hilltop vista can also be enjoyed from a shaded terrace with outdoor dining as well as from the super-modern open-plan kitchen and dining area.

On the tip of the Liakas peninsula on the Greek island of Kefalonia, facing a distant Zante, Villa Roberta has splendid sea views and a footpath to a platform with sunshades right by the water. There's also a ten-metre infinity pool, a barbecue terrace and a little garden with a lawn.
