SYDNEY, Dec 7 (Reuters) - An Australian court fined Uber Technologies Inc A$21 million ($14 million) on Wednesday for threatening cancellation fees it never charged and overstating fare estimates on some rides.

The plane circled Sardinia several times - some reports suggested that Italian and French authorities refused to let the plane land - and then returned to Athens, flying a circuitous route and avoiding passing over Sicily or western Greece.

The passengers were taken off the Dubai-bound plane, EK 210, after it taxied along the runway - only for the captain to inform them there was a technical problem, and explain they were returning to the gate, said.

Judge Michael Hugh O'Bryan said in a written ruling that by supplying inaccurate information on its smartphone app, UBER VOLOS Uber "would be expected to lead a proportion of consumers to alter their decision and not proceed with the cancellation and perhaps deter future cancellations", while distorting demand for its service.

ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said in a statement that the fine "clearly signals to businesses that misleading consumers about the cost of a product or service is a serious matter which can attract substantial penalties".

The Commission last week proposed a gas price cap that would kick in if the front-month Title VOLOS KORINTHOS TRANSFER Facility (TTF) gas price exceeded 275 euros ($289) per megawatt-hour for two weeks and was 58 euros higher than a liquefied natural gas reference price for 10 days.

EU gas prices have soared this year as Russia slashed gas deliveries to Europe following its invasion of Ukraine, prompting governments to spend hundreds of billions of euros to cushion their economies from the surge in energy costs.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), VOLOS KORINTHOS TRANSFER which brought the case against Uber, and the tech firm had already agreed on a fine of A$26 million, but O'Bryan told the court the evidence provided by both sides was "grossly inadequate", leaving him to speculate on the harm to consumers.

The revised proposal, seen by Reuters, would also extend the cap to cover not only the front-month gas contract, as the Commission proposed, Pelion taxi service but contracts with expiry dates as far forward as a quarter-year.

On Friday, countries will consider a revised proposal by the Czech Republic, which holds the rotating EU presidency, which would lower the limit to 264 euros/MWh and require prices to remain above that level for five trading days, instead of two weeks, to trigger the cap.

BRUSSELS, Dec 2 (Reuters) - European Union countries will consider on Friday a proposal for a gas price cap slightly lower than a Brussels proposal that some view as too high, with a handful of countries pushing for an even lower limit, ALONISSOS ATHENS TAXI documents seen by Reuters showed.

The judge had made clear that the lower penalty "should not be understood as any reduction in the court's resolve to impose penalties appropriate to ... deterring contraventions of the Australian Consumer Law", Cass-Gottlieb added.

But while EU countries have already agreed a raft of emergency energy measures, including requirements to fill gas storage to prepare for winter, VOLOS IGOUMENITSA TAXI diplomats expected tough negotiations on the price cap and some were doubtful a deal could be struck in time for VOLOS SERRES TAXI a Dec.

Some countries criticised the original EU proposal, including suggestions it was designed with such a high price and with criteria so strict that the cap would never be triggered, and thus fail to cushion their economies from price spikes.

In a document shared with other EU member states this week, Italy, Poland, SKOPELOS THESSALONIKI TAXI Greece, Belgium and Slovenia proposed two options: either a far lower fixed price cap of 160 euros/MWh, or a "dynamic price cap" that could fluctuate in response to existing liquefied natural gas price benchmarks.

ride-sharing app broke consumer law by misleading customers with warnings they would be charged for cancelling some rides from 2017 to 2021 and by using an inaccurate software algorithm to estimate fares for CRUISESHIP VOLOS TAXI a taxi service it offered until August 2020, the Federal Court ruled.
