ISTANBUL, July 16 (Reuters) - Turkish students and academics are set to continue protests against what they say is government interference in academia despite President Tayyip Erdogan's ousting of a rector whose appointment in January triggered months of demonstrations.

A pro-government commentator cited unnamed sources as saying the High Education Board had unanimously sought Bulu's dismissal and Ankara felt he failed to carry out desired steps, notably setting up law and communication faculties.

"Are you students or terrorists trying to raid the rector's room?" Erdogan said. We have not stood with terrorists and we will not." "This country will not again live a Gezi event in Taksim, will not allow it.

Bulu, who Turkish media say applied to be a candidate for buluqq Erdogan's ruling AK Party in a 2015 parliamentary election, was the first rector chosen from outside a university since a military coup in Turkey in 1980, Bogazici faculty members said.

On Tuesday, academics again gathered on the Bogazici campus with their backs turned to the rector's building in protest and chanted "Melih Bulu resign," carrying signs reading "159," the number of those detained on Monday.

That prompted Twitter to place Soylu´s tweet behind a notice warning that his message violated the social media platform´s rules about "hateful conduct." Twitter said, however, it had decided to allow people to click to view Soylu's tweet on grounds that it was in the public´s interest to have access to a tweet by the elected politician.

ANKARA, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Turkish police clashed on Monday with students who protested against President Tayyip Erdogan's appointment of a new rector at one of the country's top universities, saying the process was undemocratic.

The main opposition party leader, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, has called for Bulu's resignation. Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavas urged Bulu in an open letter to "sacrifice" his position instead of "academic peace, youth and our future".

'Are you students or terrorists trying to raid the rector's room?' he added. 'This country will not again live a Gezi event in Taksim, will not allow it.
We have not stood with terrorists and we will not.'

At least 69 demonstrators were detained, Halk TV television reported. Police in the capital, Ankara, also dispersed a demonstration by students who gathered near the city´s main square in a show of solidarity with the Bogazici students.

For weeks, students and faculty at Istanbul´s prestigious Bogazici University have been protesting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan´s appointment of Melih Bulu, a figure who has links to his ruling party, as the university´s rector.

An activist group named "Bogazici Solidarity" said nothing had changed and listed grievances beyond the university, including other appointments of state officials in place of elected representatives and the dismissal of various academics.

ISTANBUL, Feb 3 (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday his government would not allow month-long demonstrations at a Turkish university to grow into anti-government protests similar to those in 2013, calling the protesters "terrorists".

Defying a government ban on demonstrations, students and teachers at Istanbul's Bogazici University have protested Erdogan's appointment of Melih Bulu, an academic and former political candidate, as rector.

The United States on Wednesday said it was "concerned" by the detentions of students and other demonstrators while condemning the anti-LGBTQI rhetoric around the protests.
Turkey's interior minister on Tuesday called student protesters "LGBT deviants" on Twitter, prompting the social media platform to put a rare warning on his comment.

Late on Monday, police clashed with demonstrators who staged protests demanding the release of a group of students who were arrested over the weekend on charges of inciting hatred and insulting religious values for a poster displayed at Bogazici University, that depicted Islam´s most sacred site with LGBT flags.
