 A 'completely unique' Roman mausoleum believed to have been a burial ground for the wealthy has been discovered by archaeologists in . 
The remains, found at the Liberty of Southwark in Borough, south London, have been described as 'extremely rare', and are thought to have been used as a burial ground or tomb for wealthier people in Roman times. 
The remains of the structure feature preserved floors and walls, and the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) believe its quality makes it the most intact Roman mausoleum ever uncovered in the UK. 
With a beautiful central mosaic, the sites two layers remain intact, with a similar mosaic beneath the first floor.

Raised platforms were also found, and the steps to the lower floors remain intact. 
Excavators believe the building may have been modified at some point, as the floor is raised.

While no evidence of coffins were found at the site, more than 100 coins, roofing tiles, pieces of metal and pottery fragments were uncovered.  
Work on creating a permanent display is now underway according to MOLA, who began excavation work there on behalf of Landsec and Transport for London (TfL).

It is hoped the area will be preserved alongside urban development. 
Last year, the site was the place where the largest Roman mosaic found in London for over 50 years was uncovered.
