While the world becomes ever more increasingly aware of the dangers in the environment outside of their lives, it's things in their lives that can help them make big changes. People who always look out of their houses and see what others are doing forget to look inside. And it's inside their own homes that black mold could be developing and growing.

Black mould is a member of the fungi family. It grows most often on building materials that are made of or contain cellulose. Unfortunately there are many more types of mould that are harmful to humans besides just the black variety. Reactions to mould that grows in the home can vary from minor allergies intensifying to people who suddenly can't help but cough and wheeze all the time. Asthma sufferers experienced heightened symptoms as well.

Wet surfaces are the ideal beginning home of mould. Drywall, often covered with paper lining, can also be a home, especially if it gets wet repeatedly and fails to dry sufficiently. Leaky pipes can soak wood surfaces and make them an ideal growing area for fungus. Basements that have lots of clutter tend to accumulate moisture in many different places, and this leads to fungi growth as well.

When looking for mould growth, people should start to examine any sort of discolored stain or patch on carpets, walls and windows. Dabbing it with bleach will make it either change colour or disappear if it is indeed fungus. If the patch doesn't change after being touched by bleach, it is unlikely that it's mould.

Avoiding mould growth is just as important as detection. Homes should be kept dry with dehumidifiers if necessary. If there are leaky pipes, they should be fixed immediately. People should take shorter showers so that there is less moisture in the air. Bathroom fans should be left on for a few minutes after a shower to make sure all moisture is removed. The fan in an oven range hood should also be used when cooking is done. All household fans and vents should vent to the outside.

Drains can often become a source of moisture if they are clogged. An easy home recipe for cleaning a drain is to drop a handful of baking soda down it. This should be followed by a cup of vinegar, then the drain should be plugged. After twenty minutes, the drain should be rinsed with fresh water.

Another possible source of moisture and mould in a home is the drip tray behind a refrigerator. Most people don't even know about this. Pulling the refrigerator out to clean the tray is a good idea. The cooling coils should also be vacuumed in order to prevent the build up of dirt and moisture. All fans in a house should be cleaned out often, as these can spread mould easily.

A dry and clean clutter free home is the best way to avoid the existence of black mold in a home. Clean basements and dry bathrooms and kitchens are the best things to help stave off mould build up. All of the illnesses that can be caused by or exacerbated by mould don't have to happen and can be prevented.
